Elkton, an American Viticultural Area

Extra credit points to you if you know what viticulture means. I didn't know when we moved here.

Elkton sits at the confluence of Elk Creek and the Umpqua river, 33 miles inland from the Pacific ocean, at the northern edge of The Callahan's, as the Southern Oregon Coast Range is locally known. The Oregon Coast Range is in turn part of the Pacific Coast Ranges, which stretch from Alaska to California.

Elkton lies along OR-38 which is a very popular route for people with RVs to get to the coast and the sand dunes. But that scenic drive from I-5 to the coast highlights the challenges to building out here. With very little flat land the little town of Elkton has just 200 residents. And so, while driving through Elkton there are no stop signs to make you stop, lots of people do stop because...

The cool, moist air from the ocean travels east along the Umpqua River and into the Elkton area, bringing mild growing season temperatures, summer breezes and rain, which is kept trapped by the mountains on their west side. This climate makes for a haven for vineyards and wineries. Yep, that's what viticulture means - grapes and wine.

In addition to the 12 vineyards and 6 wineries, Elkton has a thriving community with a wonderful school the one of a kind ECEC. That's the Elkton community education center where monarch butterflies are raised and released, gardens are grown, concerts are held, children learn to lead tours and history is cherished at Fort Umpqua.

Fort Umpqua reminds us of the history of this land and the rich resources the land continues to give - from fur pelts to timber and grapes.
